How To Choose the Right Size Rug

`This question comes up a lot: "How do I know what size rug is the right size for my room?" As always, it depends on which room you're working with and the dimensions of the furniture involved. There are general rules of thumb, though, so we've gone ahead and made a chart to break it down!

For the living room, the general rule is to either have all of the furniture completely on the rug OR have the front legs of each piece of furniture on the rug.

Don't give yourself a "rug island" as many designers call it. Too-small rugs just don't look right. (If you currently have a rug island, it's okay! Consider buying a larger, flat-weave or jute rug to layer underneath it!)

For the bedroom, the same rule applies. Either have the bed and nightstands completely on the rug, or send the rug up right up to the front of the nightstands.

Once again, don't go for rugs that are just too small. Lucky for us, most rugs come in multiple sizes and you can usually find the size you need for the rug you just have to have.

In the dining room, you want to make sure that your rug is large enough to fit the table and the chairs - especially when the chairs are pulled out.

Once again, if the rug is too small, don't get it! Another tip is to match the shape of your rug to the shape of your table. In other words, rectangular rugs for rectangular tables and round or square rugs for round tables.

We've found that being able to visualize things makes them easier to understand, so we hope our chart helps you out in your own projects!
